West Auckland exercise areas

Our policy and bylaw allows your local board to set their own dog access rules. Several recommended dog exercise areas are detailed in the areas below.

Local dog access rules:

  • applies to parks, beaches and foreshore areas under the control of Auckland Council or the Department of Conservation
  • does not include details about access on regional parks. Read dog walking with restrictions for information on regional parks.

The local boards below are connected with the west of Auckland.

Henderson-Massey dog exercise areas

Dogs are to be kept under control at all times. By ensuring your dog immediately responds to commands, having it on-leash or other effective means.

These areas are recommended by our Animal Management Offices.

Owner responsibilities

Your responsibilities as a dog owner:

  • Keep your dog under control at all times.
  • While in use have you dog on-leash near sports surfaces and playgrounds
  • Wildlife protection areas are not for dogs. Dogs are often prohibited from these areas, a few areas do allow dogs on-leash so please check signs.
  • Off-leash areas are shared spaces. Please respect people's personal space, as these areas are for everyone's enjoyment.
  • Pick up after your dog and carry something to pick-up your dog's faeces. Dispose of it in bins.
  • Know your dog and when it will ignore commands. Put it on-leash, shorten the leash or avoid the area or causes.

: Henderson-Massey Off-leash

Dogs are allowed off-leash at all times on:

  • all parks not specifically identified as a prohibited or on-leash area.
: Henderson-Massey On-leash
Dogs are allowed on-leash in the following areas:
 
  • All beach and foreshore areas.
  • Harbourview-Orangihina walkway and coastal area
  • Any area that is developed or marked out as a picnic area.
: Henderson-Massey Prohibited
At all times, dogs are prohibited from the area of:
  • on or within 10 metres of any area that contains fitness apparatus.

Waitākere Ranges dog exercise areas

Dogs are to be kept under control at all times. By ensuring your dog immediately responds to commands, having it on-leash or other effective means.

These areas are recommended by our Animal Management Offices.

: Kakamatua Inlet

Really difficult for dogs to ‘escape’ the beach, so it’s almost as good as fully enclosed area.  Almost everyone there is dog friendly.

No fresh water available for dogs on beach, so make sure you take some with you

Dogs are allowed off-leash in the areas of:

Open areas of Kakamatua Inlet including beach and foreshore area.

Dogs are allowed on-leash in all other parts of Kakamatua 
SMZ:

  • Kakamatua Beach Walk
  • Orpheus Graves Walk
  • Kakamatua Inlet Track.
: Waikumete Cemetery

One of Auckland's favourite dog spots with gardens, bush walks and park land to enjoy.

Take advantage of the beautiful 108 hectares of land with the bush walks for hours of exercise. Enjoy the views of the city and Waitakere ranges, great at any time of day.

Plenty of car parking available. Taps are also available to provide water for your dog.

Please keep your dogs off the gravesites.

: Off-leash areas

Dogs are allowed off-leash in the following areas:

The following parks and reserves:

  • Armour Bay Reserve, excluding the grass area immediately adjacent to beach where dogs are to be on-leash
  • Clayburn Reserve
  • Glen Eden Depot
  • Glucina Reserve
  • Kaurilands Domain, off-leash on the grass area in south-western corner of park and bordered by the path
  • Kotinga Reserve
  • Kowhai Reserve
  • Maywood Reserve
  • Mt Atkinson Park, off-leash on the grass area only
  • Owen's Green, off-leash on the area accessible off Laingfield Terrace and Laingrange Place
  • Parrs Park, off-leash on the grass area to the north of the sports fields accessible from Tuck Nathan Drive and the northern entrance and car park area off Seymour Road
  • Piha Domain
  • Swanson Scenic Reserve, off-leash on the grass area only
  • Tamariki Reserve, off-leash on the grass area only
  • Tangiwai Reserve
  • Te Henga Reserve, off-leash on grass area bordered by Bethells Road and the car park driveway and carpark area
  • Waitākere War Memorial Park
  • Warner Park, off-leash on the grass area adjacent to beach

The following beaches and foreshore areas:

  • Davies Bay
  • Foster Bay
  • Herrings Bay
  • Warner Park Beach
  • Jenkins Bay
  • South Titirangi or Laingholm beach, from Laingholm Point to and including beach area at entrance from Tamariki Reserve
  • Perkins Bay
  • Oatoru Bay

 

: On-leash areas

Dogs are allowed on-leash on all park, beach and foreshore areas not specifically identified as a prohibited or off-leash area.

 

: Piha Beach

At all times, dogs are allowed off-leash in the areas of:

Piha Domain and the adjacent lagoon area up to the point where the beach area opens out to the south and north and as marked by appropriate marker poles.

During daylight, dogs are allowed off-leash in the areas of:

  • South of Monkey Rock to the access track at Little Lion Rock Corner (at the beginning of Marine Parade North. Between sunset to sunrise dogs must be on-leash.

At all times, dogs are allowed on-leash on all park areas adjacent to North Piha beach between Monkey Rock and the access track at Little Lion Rock Corner (at the beginning of Marine Parade North). This includes:

  • North Piha Strand
  • Piha Esplanade Reserve
  • Les Waygood Park
  • North Piha Esplanade

At all times, dogs are to be on-leash in the area of:

  • from a point approximately 190 metres north of the end of North Piha Road southwards to Monkey Rock (the regional park boundary opposite 61 North Piha Road)
  • Piha South Road Reserve adjacent to Piha Beach

At all times, dogs are prohibited from areas:

  • south of the access point at Little Lion Rock Corner (at the beginning of Marine Parade North) to the southern end of Piha Beach
  • North Piha Beach, from 190 metres of North Piha Road
  • Piha Beach, from north to south

 

: Prohibited areas
Dogs are prohibited on the northern end of North Piha Beach at all times from a point approximately 190 metres north of the end of North Piha Road and hence generally in a northern direction.
: Regional parks
Dogs are allowed off-leash in the following areas:
 
  • From sunrise until 9am, on sand area of Cornwallis Beach
  • Open areas of Kakamatua Inlet including beach and foreshore area

Dogs need to be on-leash in all other areas and associated beach and foreshore areas not specifically identified as a prohibited or off-leash area.

Dogs are prohibited from the following areas:
  • all designated picnic areas
  • all grassed areas at Cornwallis Beach within Cornwallis special management zone
  • all water supply buffer lands and reservoirs within the Water Catchment Area

The following Special Management Zone areas:

  • Whātipu Scientific Reserve
  • Pararaha Valley
  • Lion Rock
  • North Piha
  • Tasman and Gap Lookouts
  • Lake Wainamu
  • Cascades Kauri Ark-in-the-Park

Department of Conservation Land area:

  • Whātipu Crown foreshore (including beach) adjacent to Whātipu Scientific Reserve

Walks, Tracks and Trails

  • Anawhata Beach Track
  • ACW Falls Track
  • Anderson Track
  • Andersons Southern Access
  • Auckland City Walk

: Te Henga - Bethells

At all times, dogs are allowed off-leash on the areas of:

  • grass areas at the Bethells Road entrance.

During daylight, sunrise to sunset, dogs are allowed off-leash on the areas of:

  • Waitākere Bay, i.e. beach area north of the river mouth.

At all times, dogs are to be on-leash in the areas of:

  • the beach, between the marker pole to the small south headland, as marked by marker poles
  • car park, cafe and on the track leading to the lagoon and beach.

During night time, sunset to sunrise, dogs are to be on-leash in the areas of:

  • Waitākere Bay, i.e. beach area north of the river mouth.

Dogs are prohibited from the areas of:

  • O'Neill Bay
  • areas south of the southern headland, as marked by poles
  • all other areas of Te Henga Park.
